Description

I honestly liked this episode. I'm okay with Cadance and Shining Armor's baby being an Alicorn as well as Starlight being Twilight's pupil. When you think about it, lately each season has something new introduced. 4th was when Twilight has to get used to being an Alicorn Princess, 5th introduced Twilight's castle including a map that's sends the Mane 6 on friendship quests, and this season Twilight learns more about being a teacher and a new character gets to learn about friendship.

What I like:
I like how realistic the exchange was between Starlight and Sunburst was. The fact they hadn't seen each other in years and not knowing about each other as they did in their foal years. I also like how the writers made him more skilled in knowing and researching rather than execution. It gives a good balance between him and Starlight. Speaking of which, I also like how they made the decision that he didn't succeed in Magic School, which made him be able to sympathize with Starlight and how she understood of doing something she's not proud of. Which I think some people can relate to in real life, like worrying about disappointing your family and friends expectations as well as committing a deed that would make them see you differently.

Then we have Shining Armor! Lot of fans complained he's too bland, a Gary Sue. But now we see the pressure and hard work of being a father is weighing down on him. I'd be lying if I said that the moments he had in the first of the two-part episode didn't make me laugh. Plus, it was also realistic. Especially sense the baby is actually an Alicorn! To which I was a little iffy about it at first, but I warmed up to it! And before you say that she's a bland character as well... SHE HAS MORE PERSONALITY THAN MOST BABIES!!! There! I said it! I also found it cute that she was sad about separating from Pinkie... T^T   My guess the reason for that, her parents were so busy caring for her and giving everything she needs as well as taking care of their duties, that they didn't have enough time to actually play with her, which would be understandable give that she's like about a few days old. And it seems that she was having fun with Pinkie and being separated from her felt like the fun was being taken away.

It was also interesting to see that Princess Celestia and Luna couldn't completely clear away the storm. They're able to move the sun and moon, but couldn't protect the empire against the frozen north. It's interesting that they're not able to control the weather patterns in Equestria that operate on their own. Like the Everfree forest hence why ponies are so afraid of it.

I'm also glad to see that it was Sunburst who resolved the problem, then given an important role as Crystaller. Although I would like more definition of what a Crystaller is... Are they like a nanny? An advisor? I'll just say they're a nanny. Probably a good idea sense Twilight probably be too busy with her royal duties, plus, she'd probably won't have time to breathe going back and forth from Ponyville to the Crystal Empire to take care of a Crystaller's responsibilities. As Sunburst said, it's a lot of responsibility!

And praise the lord that they did not forget Twilight and Shining's parents existences! And a speaking role, no less!

What I don't like:
I wished we could have more clearance on Celestia and Luna's origin. It is said in the Journal of the Two Sisters (Though I haven't read it myself, just going off what other Bronies said...) that they were born alicorns, but them saying that they themselves don't understand an Alicorns' birth. It could be said that they were born before the founding of Equestria and that's why it has never been seen by Equestria and Celestia and Luna's birth has never been explained to them before hence why it's beyond their understanding. I just hope in some future episode or at least a comic, it will show Celestia and Luna's origins and will clear up the whole thing about being born an Alicorn.

Personally, I would like it better if Flash Sentry actually made an appearance and had a speaking role, but then again, the Flash haters would just go on a riot. So his absence is probably for the best.

Then there's the Crystal Ponies that wouldn't listen to reason. I mean come on! For as long as they lived there, couldn't they be at least be a bit worried that it was snowing despite the Crystal Hearts protection! Sunburst noticed that it was strange! And he didn't live there as long! I'd like to think they were oblivious due to the hype of their royals' baby's Crystalling, then finding out that the baby's an Alicorn. But this just makes the public look dumb. Can't we just start seeing the citizen ponies be more corporative!? Honestly!?

Conclusion:
So overall, it's a good episode and one I'd re-watch again. The humor's good and the character's actions made sense and were realistic. But I can also see how some fans may dislike this episode due to some... Characters and new characters, and some of their actions... But if you put you're biased feelings aside, you might find this episode entertaining as well as thrilling. Though not as thrilling as the past premiers and finales were.
I'd give this an 8 out of 10.

I disagree with your comment about Flash making an appearance here, honestly. Now, I'm not an outright hater, and I wouldn't mind seeing more of him if it actually fleshed out his bland character, but to me he's more of an EG character than an FiM character.
